Frequently asked questions about back pain.

What is sciatica?
Sciatica refers to pain that starts in the lower back and spreads down the leg. It is caused by pressure on or damage to the sciatic nerve. Often pins and needles or numbness are associated with the pain. Physiotherapy can help
I have been told it is a disc problem and discs can't be helped.
In the past, people have wasted alot of time and energy arguing about the source of the pain. Restoring your normal movement and function as well as reducing your pain is our focus.
I have been told my back is out and needs to be put back in
The terminology is wrong. Backs don’t go out. Similarly, they can’t be put back in. Ongoing manipulation or adjustments do not straighten or re- align spines. Muscles control spinal movement. Good muscle strength and control is important for reducing back pain.
My back is hurting, will I lie in bed for a week to fix it?
The research clearly shows that 2 days or more of bed rest is correlated with worse outcomes for back pain.
Will I need surgery?
Very few people ever require surgery for back pain. If you have had surgery, we can help you get strong and mobile again.
