A recent report estimated in 2018 there were 3.24 million Australians living with chronic pain, with more than half being of working age. Chronic pain is defined as anyone living with pain that lasts more than 3 months. The total cost of this chronic pain is estimated to be $73.2 billion. The cost of reduced quality of life for these individuals is valued at $66.1 billion. Many of these pain conditions are related to joint and muscle pains.

There are many variables that result in chronic pain. Pain does not simply have a direct relationship to tissue damage. It can be influenced by many factors including past experiences, beliefs, environmental and psychological factors. Pain can have adverse effects on people’s ability to sleep, be fully involved in normal work, social and sporting activities as well as causing fatigue and depression.
